It is found in Heilongjiang (Luobei), Liaoning (Xifeng), Inner Mongolia (Hulunbuir League from Hailaer to Duolun, Chifeng), Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi (Huashan), Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan (Gongshan). It grows on mountain slopes or valley sparse forests at altitudes of 1,000-3,600 meters, preferring moist conditions. It is also found in Russia, Kazakhstan, Japan, Iran, Mongolia, and Europe.

It has slender roots. The stems are tufted, erect, lower branches with four edges. The leaves are linear-lanceolate to linear, 2-4.5 cm long, 2-4 mm wide, pointed at the apex, slightly narrowed at the base, with short margin hairs, stalkless, pale green, hairless on both sides, and with a prominent midrib.
